Psychodrama in Orange County

Psychodrama Options at Lido

Psychodrama is a structured form of therapy developed in the early 1900s to help people work through painful emotions. It usually takes place in a group therapy session. However, it can still be used during individual therapy.

The affected person dramatizes the problem or conflict in front of other therapy members. The therapy participants can participate in the dramatization process, but each performance is focused on a single person’s conflict.

Psychodrama in Orange County is grounded on the principles of creativity, spontaneity, and role theory. These factors help evoke emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses in those undergoing therapy.

Acting out their conflicts helps the patient see themselves and their situations from an outsider’s perspective and begin exploring and seeking new solutions to their problems.

How does Psychodrama in Orange County Work?

Each session is focused on the conflict of one member as the rest of the members take on roles as needed.

There are 3 phases to each session:

Warm-up phase – Members of the group adopt roles and introduce themselves. The goal of this phase is majorly to establish trust and group cohesion.

Action phase – The therapist helps the protagonist create a scene based on the events in their life. Some techniques include role reversal, where the protagonist takes up a role of a significant person in their life. Mirroring is a technique where the protagonist becomes an observer; through this method, they get to understand their situation from a different perspective. A group member may adopt the protagonist role and express out loud any emotions and thoughts they believe to be experienced by the protagonist.

Sharing phase – The group discusses the events of the action phase and shares thoughts and observations that could help the protagonist come up with a solution.
