Mental And Emotional Health
Go Hand-In-Hand
The World Health Organization (WHO) declares that health is “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease.”
While the terms mental and emotional health are often used interchangeably, emotional health focuses on being in tune with our emotions, vulnerability, and authenticity, while mental health focuses on our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
Just as it requires effort to build and maintain one’s physical health, the same goes for mental health, as there are so many ways that life takes a toll on our emotional well-being.
Due to stigma surrounding mental health (feelings of guilt, shame, and fear), emotions and other factors get in the way of people receiving the help that they need. Instead, individuals often cope with their emotional and psychological distress by self-medicating with drugs and alcohol and engaging in self-destructive behaviors.
Having both good emotional and mental health is fundamental to a person’s overall wellbeing. If you’ve made consistent efforts to improve your mental and emotional health and still aren’t functioning optimally at home, work, or in your relationships, it may be time to seek professional help.
At Lido Health and Wellness Center in Newport Beach, California, our mental health specialists can help you or a loved one learn how to foster resilience and self-awareness, to better manage the ups and downs of day-to-day life.
